I had no idea that we released 1000 tons of carbon dioxide per day just to read the paper. When you think of reading the paper you think of the trees you are destroying but I haven't thought about what it did beyond that. Actually through this whole study that is really what has hit me the most. We reduce our carbon emissions by minimizing what we use on a day to day basis. We need to make smarter choices, think about the effect each item we use had on the world. In the instance of the newspapers, we could read the articles online rather than on printed paper. We need to take that approach to everything, asking ourselves if there is a more efficient solution to what I am doing or using.
Shannon, it is crazy to think about our carbon output just based on paper, imagine how that is multiplied when we look at textbooks. There is a big trend to start using e-books in higher education, which I think is a good idea and will help reduce our carbon footprint, but it is hard to get a lot of students to use them.
I knew that us americans used up more supplies then any other country. I had no idea we were over the top with it. I was shock to see that if every counrty used up as much supplies as we have or do that out usesge would be cut into less then half. Not only that but teens take up 50% when it comes to cell phones. It really takes 191,000,000 trees to be cut down for us to read the sundays paper. That's just sunday. We need to cut back on many tn=hings that can be prevented.
I was very surprised to learn how much carbon emissions are created by gasoline in our vehicles-360 tons of these emissions in our lifetime! Some ways we can reduce these emissions are driving less often and/or carpooling. Since I have three small children, carpooling for my family is not very feasible. However, I can choose to limit my trips throughout the week. I also found it very interesting how many different places the parts of our vehicles come from!
I am amazed and appalled even more with every video I watch. I cannot beleive how much we waste in every aspects of our lives and I am so guilty. I don't even think about the consequences for my every day actions and I don't think that most people do. We would have to almost go back and live like cavemen to prevent the damage to the beautiful earth that our God created for us to live.
I was surprised to learn about the carbon emissions from paper. Being a teacher, I make a lot of copies for my students. I have never thought about how much carbon emissions are coming from all that paper. A way that we are working towards cutting down on all the carbon emissions is by cutting down on the use of paper. We have started doing most of out testing on computers, and the students can actually do homework on the computer and email it. I think more schools should move in this direction. It would be much better for our environment. If we start with this, we can move towards other things that would also help cut down on emissions and save resources.
The human footprint videos all amaze me anyway. What surprised me the most would have to be how many trees that we use. Of course I know that it takes trees to make paper but how much it really takes. We are getting ready to get into the holidays we send as Americans1.9 billion holiday cards. If we turn off lights TVs and other electronics that will help, also turning down water heater settings.
The Human Footprint video was very enlightening. What suprised me the most is to find out how much paper is used just to produce the sunday paper. When I read the sunday paper I dont think about what or how many of our presious resouces are used. Over 500,000 trees are used to make a weeks worth of news papers and 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide released a day to read the paper. The amout of carbon dioxide released is crazy. I think we can reduce this amount by recycling our old news papers. So that we can reuse old papers to create new ones.Another way to conserve is to Recycle, reduce, reuse, and close the loop.

This is Catina Moore, I am always amazed of the numbers of all that we as an American consume on the on just the things we need. I wasn't aware of the many trees that we destroy on newspaper, no wonder it get hard at times to breath the air. We replace our oxygen for carbon dioxide when we destroy our trees. I can do my part by driving less, I can create some fun exciting family activities to do at home. Instead of spending money (money trees), this will also help with burning unessessary fuel. I can also purchase artificial Christmas trees and recycle them when they began to get old and worn.
This is Melanie Croxall, I can't believe how much paper is used to make the sunday paper!! This is insane. We waste so much during the holidays and this is very unfortunate. I am also surprised by how much carbon dioxide is used and put in the air. No wonder we have global warning and all of this pollution.
The paper surprised me the most. I lived in NY in an area where I could not get the paper delivered so I didn't subscribe. If the kids even needed it for current events I would get it from the corner store. When I moved to FL I thought it would be a great idea to support the community by purchasing the paper. The kids would also have it if they need it for current events. In the 18 months I've lived here they have only used it once for currents events. I'm too busy during the week to read so I throw it away Monday through Friday. I only read it on the weekends. When I tried to change it they convinced me to keep it and offered me an lower rate. I'm actually doing more harm keeping the paper. I throw it out 5 out of 7 days, I couldn't believe it. Recycle and encourage others to do the same. We need to use less and just cut down in general. We drive to the mall to buy stuff we don't need and then we throw it out because we don't use it, or we get bored of it. It's crazy how much we spend. We need to find other ways to entertain ourselves.
I must say that with every video I am a little more suprised at what I see. It is amazing at the amount of materials we go through in our lifetime. If we can try and recycle, cut down on unecessary trips, and read the paper online, it will really make a difference. It is eye opening to know that Americans are making such an impact on the world.
I did not know that it requires 43 trees per person to make a newspaper that we are going to read in our lives. 500 thounsand trees to make the Sunday paper. We go through so many forms of paper in our lifetime. Wrapping paper, newspaper, and magazines. I really does not seem like it is that much when we think of just our own use but really it is so much that we are wasting. So much carbon dixied is put into the air when we cut down trees. We must really recycle if we want to save our Earth and our paper.
I am amazed that it takes that many trees to make the sunday paper, especially because they are made once a week. Imagine how many trees are wasted in a year! Another thing that surprised me was the carbon emission from cars, trucks and machinery. I feel really guilty about the waste we have created.
Wow we really need to consider riding a bike or car pooling if we work or go to long distance. I knew oil consupmtion was a issue but I never knew that it was a major issue.
500,000 to make the sunday paper alone!! Im starting to get a little disgusted with all the waste I accumulate, Im in my early 30's and already I have done my fair share of waste, Im worried that we will eventually run out of resources. To make matters worse, other countries waste much less than we do. God willing I will have a lot more years to go in this life, we can't keep wasting as we have been!
Average Americans carbon foot print is equal to 20 tons. We are consuming resounces faster than the Earth can replace them. If everyone else uses lead the way that we do then it would be gone in four years instead on the 42 year reserve. I think we really need to find a way to perserve these things. Americans uses way to many resources than other countries. Something need to be done.
I did not know that Americans waste so many things. We have to cute down 191,000,000 million trees to make all the papers for one year, enough to cover the entire state of South Carlina. It is so much carbon dioxide is released into the air daily. We need to recycle as an entire country. If we don't get everyone on board with recycling we are going to use up all the resounces that we need to live and survive here on Earth.
It surprised me that it takes up to 5oo,ooo trees to make our Sunday Newspaper each week. And that people will look at 5,054 Newspapers in a lifetime. We use a lot of paper and we are cutting down alot of trees.Driving less will help us with the carbon emisions.
I was shocked about how much paper we use and consume and we really waste alot during the holidays. From the wrapping paper, to cards, valentine cards and even the food. As a nationa 265 million turkeys. we are wasteful and we must do better, I am doing my part now this class has really opened my eyes.I know a friend of mine who is apart of a car pooling team and they take turns driving and they travel as a team for their job. I think that is great especilly because it is over 13 people on the team.
What surprised me most is where all of the materials come from to make an automobile. I had no idea that it took so much from so many different places to build a car. I was also surprised about the raw materials it takes to make a cell phone. I think if we use what we buy until we are forced to purchase new items, we could help lessen our carbon footprint.
I was surprised by the amount of paper that we use. We grow trees just to cut them down and use them just to make paper products. The easiest way to reduce carbon emissions is to car pool or use the city bus to get around. It is cheaper than paying $4.00 a gallon for gas.
This video was very interesting to watch and realize how much trees is needed to make paper. We waste a lot of paper every day, we read the paper, magazines, etc…and when we finish reading we throw it in the trash.
I didn't know that a cell phone was so complexed to make. We use a lot of paper in the world which causes us to cut down a lot more trees. The best way to cut the cost of gas is to car poll to work. I would buy a bike if my job was close enough from my house as well.
I was surprised by the amout trees it takes to make news paper, magazines, books and anything that has to deal with cutting down trees.Use ebooks instead of paper books, watch the new on tv instead of buying a newspaper, ride the city bus line instead of driving, recycle cell phones instead of throwing them away.
Yes, that is one good trend that is happening for nature. More people are using tablets and buying books and magazines online, which is helping to reduce the use of trees.
After watching the two videos what surprised me the most was how all different car parts come from all over the world and how much trees it take to make newspapers. What we can do to reduce carbon emmisions is drive less and get news facts from the news instead of buying newspapers.
I think what surprised me the most is the amount of trees we cut down for our newspaper and magazines. Also the footprint we leave behind. The only way of stopping this is by reading more in the internet and printing less. What also surprised me was the cellphone use of natural resources.
I have found all the Human Footprint videos so far, very interesting and informative. I knew that paper came from trees, but I never gave thought to the fact that since trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen that we need to survive, the more paper we produce, the more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Obviously, our oxygen is also at risk. One way in which we could reduce carbon emmissons is by reducing the number of Christmas trees we use each year, 20 million of them - only to be thrown out a couple weeks later.
I was surprised most by the amount of trees that are used for newspaper, magazines, books, cards and etc. I know newspapers are printed daily and paper is used daily but when you put a number figure on it and actually think about the amount that's used its surprising. In order to reduce carbon emissions we could use paperless methods to receive our news and also reduce the amount of driving we do.
At first when I heard it took 43 trees to make up for all the paper we will read in a lifetime, I didn't think nothing of it. When I found how many trees were used to make our Sunday paper each week I got a little worried. The 191,000,000 trees used a year got me upset because they know the trees are our life support and for them to cut so many down with ease seems cruel and unusual. These people are destroying us. This to me is pure ignorance.
What suprised me the most is how much trees we used for paper. We can cut down carbon emissions by using less paper. For example, being a teacher they make alot of copies that students throw to waste instead of recycling the paper that the kids do not use. Another way we can reduce carbon emission is to cut down on the cards and wrapping paper we use on holidays. Wrapping paper goes to waste fast because we use it as a decorative cover and a way of keeping the gift a sercet. So if we consider the fact of using so much paper it will possibly cut down carbon emissions.
what surprised me most about this human footprint is that our nation only makes up 5% of the world population yet we use so many resources. I like how they used the example about the tree's that was also very interesting to know that we use so much paper. But the part about the car wasn't a real surprise to me because we all commute at one time or another.
I wasn't aware of the many trees that are destroyed just to make news paper. By eliminating the trees causes the oxygen level to drop and replacing it with carbon dioxide. To help with this problem, I can start off by buying artifiical Christmas trees and recycling them when old and worn. And planting live trees and plants often a yaer to help bring live to this situation.
I am amazed at how much trees it takes to make paper, 500,000 to be exact. I learn so much each week that I would have never thought of on my own. These Human Footprint videos are teaching me a lot, I had no idea each person uses 43 trees per person including myself. I am not much of a newspaper girl, but I had no idea there are 5,054 newspapers being read every day. Let alone finding out there is 365 tons of co2 being released each year! With that, there is 1,000 tons of co2 released every single day. That information alone blows my mind !
I was shock about the amount of trees we cut just to make newspapers. One week worth of newspapers means 500,000 trees gone. But in a year it is over one million trees cut.The main thing I was shocked about was the superbowl was the most celebrated event food wise.
I was surprised when i realized how much it takes to make paper. Not only that but the amount of carbon that is released. I think a way that we can reduce carbon emissions is by recycling.
I was really surprised when i found out that the super bowl is the most food celebrated event. I was also shocked when i heard it takes 43 trees to produce all the newspapers you will read in your lifetime. Each year we send enough post cards to stretch along the whole San Fransisco. That's amazing. It is also shocking that we cut down nearly 20,000,000 christmas trees each years.
The most surprising fact that I learned after veiwing both videos is that the United States uses 30 percent of the world's cars. In my lifetime, I will have driven 627,000 miles and used 31,350 gallons of gas. Also, I was surprised to leran that we throw away over 129,000,000 cell phones. It takes so much to excavate the mineral coltan to make the phone. I think that I can reduce carbon emissions by purchasing a hybird vehicle and trying to walk or ride my bike instead of driving. Also, I would recycle my cell phone and advise others to do too. Last, I would stop subscribing to the newspaper and try reading it online since it takes 500,000 trees to make Sunday papers for one year.
What surprised me was that as a nation we use more than 25% of the world's energy, and burn up to 20 tons of coal per person annually. That is 285 tons of coal used for our power needs per person in our life time; not to mention all the trees it takes to make our newspapers and magazines. I think the U.S. seems selfish in its consumption of precious resources compared to other countries. Ways in which I could reduce my carbon emissions are: to recycle, use less water, unplug electronic that are not in use, work with others to replace trees that are cut down due to our growning needs, and walk to work.
We can all do our part to reduce the waste in our economy. We can start by going paperless for our newspaper our banking needs etc., the option is available so we can start there which will have a great impact in our world. Holiday cards, and wrapping paper, though we like the look and feel of some of these things, we need to stop and consider the planet. Our consumption of food, as Americans, is out of control and we need to cut back on our consumption, we over consume in so many ways. Carpooling is another way that I know if this was available to me I would use. I believe that cities can do more to implement and motivate commuters to take public transportation or carpooling to and from work this will cut down on carbon emissions and the gasoline consumption. To know that we amount to only five percent of the world’s population and yet we consume more than a quarter of the world’s energy is astounding.
When you think about the convenience we’ve come to love about cell phones, we do not think about the price that is paid. Is it really worth disrupting wild life and displacing the lives of others with illegal mining to get these things to us? This is something for us all to think about.
These videos have been nothing short of mind blowing. YOu don't realize how crazy of an impact we are leaving behind, because of getting caught up in our normal daily routines. The car is a huge emission problem that has become almost essential in today's lifetime. If we try and cut down on travel and leisure that would benefit the Earth and our future. Recycling seems to be a huge benefit as well. If we just take a small amount of time a day to recycle, it could help cut down material waste as well.
The internet is a huge part of our lives nowadays, and if we start subscribing or even reading the news on the web it would help cut down the waste and carbon emissions in a year. Just think that 1000 tons of carbon on emitted a day just to produce the newspaper.
Everything has become a convenience today, and we are so used to it, it would be hard to turn back now. Thinking about our future and the future generations, it is something we need to start making mandatory just to avoid running out of material and ultimately hindering the Earth.
I understood that as we are polluting the earth with our vehicles and what not it is causing the earths atmosphere to become thinner and thinner, creating global warming. Though after watching the videos I didn't realize the extent of how much we are exposing harming our own environment. Vehicles in general create 6 tons of carbon emissions a year. In general 1,540 tons of carbon we will generate in a lifetime. It will take 4- planets to meet our demand of natural resources to absorb our waste and pollution. In order for us to reduce carbon emissions we should first try to become eco-friendly. Investing in using hybrid vehicles rather than the average vehicles today may be a little bit more costly but will pay off in the end by reducing the amount of carbon that we have been releasing into the atmosphere.
I beleive that we can reduce the carbon emission. Thing like people have mentioned before the x mas paper, boxer the gifts come in, drywall tear down, all cardboad and platics use for shipping and manufacturing produce and goods we the consumer buy. All of this go straight to the trash site to be burn and yet we use so mush of it. They also say that global warming is in the air and mist and also a journey towards upcoming events. A lot of people fail to recycle because they think oh its just one box. one jug, but it eveyone thinks like that then we in fact have a problem. a problem that can be fixed.
I never realize how much food we intake doing the Holiday days, especially the turkey, alone with all the other sides that goes with the dinner. One would think Thanksgiving is a day that we would intake the most foods; however after looking at the Human Footprint, the NFL Super Bowl is the time we consume the most foods.
Airplanes fly high, and they burn fuel in large quantities. They have direct access to the atmosphere above and the emissions caused are left as residuals in the atmosphere at higher altitudes. When an airplane flies, it pumps carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and also organic compounds into the atmosphere. These chemicals are volatile in nature.
What surprised me the most about clips 7&8 Living is not simple. Everything we do makes an impact on the world we live in. Just reading newspapers or using our cell phones can be dangerous to our ecosphere, as we know it. What surprised me more about the human footprint part 7 and 8, are the volume and varying types of natural resources needed to make simple things like newspapers and cellphones.
Can I think of ways I can reduce my carbon emissions? Consider using hybrid cars. Buy organic and local. Pay attention to packaging. Ditch bottled water: try reusable bottles to refill my drinking water. Energy-proof my home. Unplug appliances not in use. Switch water heaters to vacation mode. Use cold water in the washer machine. Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
In Footprint 7 I learned how many trees it took to make newspapers,500,000 tons; it is always said use less papers and save the trees. We need trees and we need paper. As the population grows there will always be some copies of news prints in the Libraries, history is made every day, recordings every day. Should technology fails where do we turn for information. Recycling paper and usages makes up for the saving of the trees. In footprint 8, about the cell phones, I learned of Coltan a new element used in the makeup at the rick of human lives, animals and forestry; the greed and control of this element to the use and pleasure of the rest of the world.
Can I think of ways I can reduce emmission? Yes, simply by making less trips especially to the stores where you can get several items - make a list and stick to it. I used to go to the store two or three times per week, now I go once with a list. I am not depriving my self of staples but the gas will have to be stretched to and from Work, Church, shopping and visits to the elderly in Hospitals, Rehabs or homes. Less trips per week, less emmission.
I knew trees were used to make newspaper, but didn't realize that it took that many trees to get it publish and print. So many people read the newspaper everday. Once a tree is chopped down the oxygen level drop.
Looking at what it takes to make a car and every part on the car comes from various states even China, Sweden and German. That was amazing to me.
I work several Super Bowl events as a vendor and I am incline to say at these events there is a lot of food. So I believe the Super Bowl is the most food brought. Everyone has some type of Super Bowl gathering at their home.
It continues to amaze me with each human fotprint I watch the amount of things we use and waste in our lifetime is crazy. Paper comes from trees we all know that but I never stopped to think about the other things that come from paper/trees that are really unneccesary. Such as greeting cards, we use so many trees to give a card that just ends up in the trash. Ways in which I can reduce carbon emmissions would be to make my next vehicle purchase a hybrid and cutting back on travel.
What surprised me the most as well as and learning experience is that we release 1000 tons of carbon dioxide per day just to the paper. Working in and hospital l I make a lot of copies of patients information daily. I would’ve never in a million years thought about how much carbon dioxide is being used. Even when it comes down to reading a newspaper.
Human Footprint 7 & 8....I was surprised about how many trees are used in a week to furnish newspaper and magazines, i dont feel as though that is a necessity and should be cut back by utilizing online or cutting back to every other day. In addition the greeting cards that are purchased around the holidays only for them to be throwed out a couple of weeks later, because who really keeps greeting cards. Cells phones is a device many cant live without and we go through at least 2 a year, we should all learn to recycle them.We can start to reduce our carbon emissions by manufactures only producing hybrid vehicals. We as humans are very thoughtless when it comes to the products we used and misued. We all need to be mindful and think about the wildlife and human life that is at risk.
In the Human footprint every time it never seems to amaze me. I was surprised about all the paper used. I feel as if we should cut down on the waste even more! I just feel as if we don't notice all the waste we have in the world. I enjoy watching these videos to learn more about the world.
I was most surprised by how many trees are used for newspapers and also how much more Americans use resources verses other countries around the world. We can reduce our carbon emissions by using electric vehicles or perhaps carpooling or riding a bike.
Week 5 Human Foot Print, All I could say is wow. I have learned so much in the last couple of weeks in Human footprint, Pampers and Newspapers have something in common, they have trees in them; as for the car; the parts come from different part of the world; before they put them together. I am on my fourth car; I don’t even touch the base of having cars. According to footprint a person may change their car 17 time, I could see some people do just that, the wear, and tear, the maker, and the +model and of course the year, the funny thing is the manufacturer knows that every year they comes out with a new model. It is what it is.
It is amazing the amount of carbon that we generate in our lifetime. What we need to do is keep pushing for paperless bills, newspapers, books, magazines and anything else that would be in print. We also need to push on public transportation rather than everyone buying multiply cars and create more tax incentives when you car pool or use public transportation. It is up to all of us to try and reduce the use of fossil fuels and natural resources as much as possible.
I was amazed at the amount of trees used in the production of newspapers. It would be beneficial if more people would use online options to get their news, pay their bills, etc. If more people would use online resources then the trees could be used to help the environment. Unfortunately I am not surprised to see that America is the leading user of natural resources, we live in a disposable society. Most people want the newest best product available with little regard to the environment.
I was completely shocked about how many trees that are used to make newspapers and magazines. Most of the time I only get newspapers just for the Sunday coupons. There are so many times I get Magazines in the mail, and throw them away. I was also in shocked with the amount of Christmas trees are cut down. Coming into the Christmas season billions of Christmas card to be sent out, and tons of wrapping paper will be used. I never realized the amount paper that I waste, I would desperately tried to recycle more. I myself already car pool not for environmental reasons, but for economic reasons. I have learned that taking one car is cheaper than taking four. It is up to all of us as a whole, to due our part to recycle and use less resources.
I was surprised that 191 million trees are used for making all the papers for one year. Trees absorbs Carbon Dioxide and release oxygen, cutting down these trees means 365500 tons of Carbon Dioxide released into the air each, rather than creating oxygen. With all these technologies we need to go paperless and save the trees. Even those holiday cards and wrapping paper, one can send e-card via email and save some trees not to mention some money.
Another surprise is, the parts of a car came from all over the world, Canada, Sweden, Germany, South Korea and Japan to name a few. Our driving habits, one drives an average of 11000 miles a year, which is 627000 miles over a lifetime, along with gasoline that creates 6 tons of carbon emissions a year. The use of hybrid cars would possible cut emissions by a third and we need more car pooling. Even though Thanksgiving is the biggest holiday, I did not realize that people consumed more food during the Super Bowl game. In regards to cell phones, there is no need to upgrade so often. As one is on the market, few months later an upgraded one is out and what do we do with the old ones?
We never thought about the amount of trees used to make newspapers and the carbon dioxide rereleased in the atmosphere when we read the newspaper each year and throughout our lifetime. It is amazing! I believe recycling and technology helps to minimize the amount of newspapers, and magazines printed each year. We can read the newspaper and magazine on the internet, Amazon Kindle, E-book reader, the nook and so many other devices. Many companies as the supermarket, the sanitation department and ever corporations have established the “GO GREEN” programs to minimize the waste we create by recycling these products. It also amazes me to see the amount of cell phone used by Americans and amount thrown away. As indicated by Human Footprint 8, “If everyone can recycle their cell phones instead of tossing them, we can reuse precious metals and save resources, wild life and even human lives”.
I was surprised 191, 000, 000 trees are used just for making papers every year. It really makes me think about my Sunday papers. I get 8-10 papers every week just for the coupon inserts, nothing more! That is a bunch of carbon dioxide being released into the air. I could reduce some of it by just getting the inserts from people who get the papers but do not use the coupons. It may not save much, but even the smallest amount is something!
Human Footprint 7 gave me quite some amount of surprizes, with the amount of turkeys we eat at Thanksgiving, the amount f trees we cut down to make newspaper and the amount of carbondioide that is released when the trees are cut down. Then we got to cars and their make up, just where the parts of the cars are made; so you car actually comes from across the world. In Human footprint 8 2685 planes take of daily from Atlanta airport, now that amazing. I know that cell phones are used highly however the actual numbers are crazy; 1.2 billion cell phones are in use, n ow thats a whole lot of talking. Suggeestion by the narrator was to recycled our cell phones instead of tossing them out, and that would be a good way to save on precious metal...Interesting
Human footprint 7 and 8 were both really interesting. I didn't realize how many trees are used to make paper and how much CO2 is released in the air because of all the missing trees. Its crazy how many cell phones are used around the world. I didn't realize what actually went into making cell phones and how complex the whole process is.
What shocked me was it takes 500,000 trees just to make the Sunday paper each week. That's a lot of trees. I think we all can cut back by reading the paper online instead of buying the paper daily.
I am astounded by the amount of materials they humans have been using throughout our time on Earth. I was surprised to learn that many common resources may be gone for good within my lifetime and I wonder what we will use when we run out of them, for instance lead. I can reduce my carbon footprint by not using as many resources; i.e., walk or ride a bike instead of driving, downsize to cheaper forms of transportation, and reduce the amount of items I use that requires packaging
Edris Logan-Briscoe After viewing parts 7 and 8, I was mostly surprised about all the natural components, materials, and minerals we use to produce a car, newspaper, cell phone etc. We take everything we have for granted not realizing the impact we are leaving behind. Between cutting down the trees to generating the newspaper and the amount of flights every day, our air is filled with carbon dioxide. What kind of world will the future generations have? They will need to where oxygen mask if something is not done now. To reduce carbon emissions I have been using cold water in washer, but need to adjust to bathing in cold water. I have started to reduce the temperature for bathing; adjust the temperature of water heater; continue to recycle; using the newsstand on computer more instead of buying; reduce unnecessarily driving trips and frequency to store; look towards buying a Hybrid car; plug out appliances not in use; open the windows more and turn off the air conditioner; and reduce flying trips.
I found both Human Footprint 7 & 8 very interesting but alarming at the same time. For me it pointed out why recycling is so important and that one person making changes in their life can make a difference. I was surprised by the amount of trees it taked to make the newspapers we read daily. With modern technology, more people should consider reading their papers online. The study also pointed out how much faster American's use carbons verses other countries. It made me sad to think of the effect all of this has on our wildlife. I think if all americans were aware of the things pointed out in this documentary they may think twice about some of thier daily actions.
I tend to get Sunday's paper just for the weekly ads and coupons, and sometimes i even get two. After i get what i want the rest is thrown away. After watching these videos i had a big eye opener. To learn how many trees are used for Sundays paer and how much carbon dioxide used per day showed me that i am wasting big time. I can save money and paper just by going online and if i did choose to buy a paper i could and should recycle all that i don't use.
I've often looked at our skyscrapers and infrastructure and wondered how would it be before we ran out of material to make concrete; or the rate at which we use fossil fuels and how much long we have before that well runs dry. But the thing that really got my attention was the fact that we may very well run out of oxygen at the rate we are killing trees. I, for one, plan to use as little paper as I can, while instilling this awareness in the minds of my family and friends.
After watching videos 7 and 8 I was amazed at the amount of carbon dioxide that we use compared to other countries. One way to possibly eliminate that could be by getting hybrid cars but them again they are expensive. And as far as 43 trees per person in a lifetime, well for me that statistic is very different. I coupon almost every week and I get a total of 4 newspapers. I could help reduce that by printing out coupons over the internet and go down to 1 paper a week. We all need to make changes to our lifestyle or our world will be even more toxic and unhealthy for ourselves.
After watching Human foot print 7 and 8 I was surprise to learn that it takes 500,000 tress to make our Sunday paper that why its so important for us to recycle. At some point we had all just threw away the newspaper and not knowing this was one of the ways to save the environment. I can reduce carbon emissions by either going online to read the paper or make sure I can recycle all the paper that I do not use. My family and I already make sure we recycle the plastic container now we will make sure that we will recycle the newspaper and magazines also.
After watching the videos 7 and 8 I was amazed on several different things.First of all I never stop to think about the tons of carbon dioxide we use. The holiday of Thanksgiving just passed, and never once did I think about how many turkeys it was going to take for every one until I looked at the video. Trees really play an important part with the holidays. Trees are our source for our wrapping paper we use and the cards we send to our love ones. Its amazing how all these things take place and we never stop to think how until it is put right in front of us in a video.
Randy Daniels Viewing video 7 and 8 it bring more attention to paper and the many different uses we have for it. Paper is used for many things and is very helpful but very much over used. With newspapers, wrapping paper, books and just everyday product it is over used and unnessecary. With all the new technology we need to learn better ways to make and package items so that we can cut back on the usage of paper and other products.
After viewing 7 and 8 videos again.. I am amazed of how much raw material that is used to assemble a vehicle, as well as where all the different states and countries that the parts come from. I was also shocked about the total amount of cell phones we as users dispose each year, just because a new type of cell phone comes out. I'm still wondering if I am actually going to go through 12 vehicles in my lifetime, because I am only on my second car now. And I am 30 plus of age.
I can not believe that we cut down nearly 191,000,000 a year just for newspapers, enough to cover the entire state of South Carolina. Releasing 365,500 tons of carbon dioxide will be unabsorbed each year because these trees are not there to absorb them. 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide released a day just to read the newspaper that I do not read! We need to quickly move our country more into the digital age as soon as possible!
I would say the main thing that shocked me in watching videos 7 & 8 was the number of trees it took just for us to read the news paper on sundays as well as the number of trees that were cut down in order for the state of south carolina to have news papers. I never knew it took that many things from the earth to make everyday things such as a newspaper which is what everyone reads. I would say the best way to cut down on the carbon is intsead of cutting the trees do, go GREEN and do everything electronically as well as start buying those hybrid vehicles which don't pollute the earth like regular cars.
Ouida Ricketts I was shocked after watching, as I did not realize the amount of things that goes into making a car, cell phone and all the other stuff. Without trees we will not have enough production of oxygen and the pollution will get even worse from the carbon dioxide emitted every day as we go about our busy lives. To reduce carbon emissions we can take less flights, read newspaper online, adjust our water heater temperature, open windows and turn off air conditioner, drive hybrid if can afford it etc.
Oh wow, that's a lot of tree's to make one paper. I didn't think about the tons of carbon dioxide we use. 365,500 tons of carbon will be unabsorbed each year and 1000 a day just to read the paper. I was never big on recycling things but after viewing and seeing the importance of it I will start. I was totally shocked about the materials it takes to make a car!
After Viewing parts 7 & 8 of the human footprint, what surprised you the most? Can you think of ways you can reduce your carbon emissions?
One way to reduce carbon emission would be when flying take a direct flight instead of hopping from plane to plane. In other words, book a direct non-stop flight and this will cut done on carbon emission. Secondly, when shopping for your next vehicle look for a hybrid because it uses one-third less carbon emission. Thirdly, Instead of buying a newspaper, you could just simply read the newspaper online. I personally did not realize that it took so many trees to make a newspaper. We cut down 191 million trees a year just to write the newspaper. I think today's society has become perplex at how wasteful we are and after viewing these videos it really brings it into perspective how wasteful out society has become and I also do not believe we did this on purpose. I never gave it much thought as to how wasteful I really am and I try to recycle as much as possible in order to reuse and not be wasteful.
Its crazy how trees can produce oxygen and take away carbon monoxide, but the average person uses up to 43 trees in the lifetime. Instead of using trees to our advantage, we instead continue to cut them down. You would think newspaper would be in the past in this day and age with electronics. Its important for people to take advantage of e-billing to cut down on paper used in our mail services. I can't believe how much food and products can be used on holidays or even events such as the Super Bowl. As Americans we only hold 5% of the world population but own over 30% of the world cars. This shows how much we use technology and are far ahead of other countries. This isn't always good because this can show how wasteful we are as a country. One way I think I can reduce my own carbon emissions is by cutting down on my gas consumption seeing as how I travel a lot. I only live a few miles from my workplace but I bet I could find people to carpool with which cut down on my carbon emissions but also helps others. One thing I have been using for years is online bill pay so I cut down on my paper usage. Jonathan Harnage
I have always thought paperless bank and bill statements were great because we were saving paper, but I just didn't think of all the others things like Christmas cards, wrapping paper, etc. that also use paper. I love having a live Christmas tree also but when you see how many Christmas trees we cut down in a year just for Christmas it seems ridiculous. I am definitely going to have to think this through before next Christmas. I also never really understood the importance of recycling our cell phones, but after seeing the video and the situation in Africa, I will definitely recyle it. These videos are great because they really get you to thinking about the importance of saving the Earth's resources.
Michael farrell i find it interesting that only since gas prices have gone up, have people started to become concerned with the amount of fuel there vehicle uses. but fuel use and carbon emission go hand in hand. If cost is the determining factor, then so be it, but at least there is something that convinces people to be more green. i recently bought a new truck, i went from a lifted 4wd Chevy, over sized tires, etc. to a newer model of the same truck, this time 2wd, and with a smaller engine. sure I'm lacking 4 wheel drive, and it doesn't have the power of my old truck, but the reduction in carbon emissions is night and day. I'm also feeling the benefits at the gas pump, which is a nice bonus.
Jennifer Olson The thing that surprised me the most was that our cellphones require colten and the destruction it causes in the country it is mined in. I have personally refused to by gems mined through conflict but I never knew that cellphones caused the same problem. I think I will have to upgrade less often and I will always recycle them now...I feel bad that I was ignorant to this until now. :( We could lower our carbon emissions by driving less. We could carpool to work, walk to the local grocery store or park, and we could buy cleaner cars. We could also unplug electronics when they are not in use and change out our light bulbs for more efficient ones.
Jenifer, I think a lot of people really do not know what goes into making a cell phone and the problems equated with that. Even just the manufacturing process has caused issues if we look at the problems that has happened with Apple in China.
After viewing both parts 7 & 8 what surprised me the most was the fact of how many different countries provide materials to build one automobile. If we could manufacture the parts needed for the assembly of an automobile, we could help to stimulate the country's economy by creating several jobs for this process alone. Another startling fact was the number of trees destroyed to print the Sunday's newspaper-500,000 trees. Another extreme form of waste. This can also be reduced by encouraging more people to read the newspaper online, rather than in print.
I was not aware of how many parts on our cars that came from other countries and that 30% of the World's cars are here in the U.S. In the making of cars we use plastics, paint, toxic solvents and of course gas. We also use 10.5 million barrels of oil a day, 6 tons of carbon emission a year, although hybrid cars do cut the carbon emission by 1/3. We also cut down 20 million Christmas trees a year, that is amazing. Did you know that during the Super Bowl, 15,000 tons of chips are bought and eaten. I think we need to make the hybrid cars more affordable so that more people can afford them. Although do save money on gas and helps with the carbon emissions, that will not happen if people cannot by them.
It scares me to think that everything we do impacts the earth. Simple things like using our cell phones can be dangerous to the atmosphere. What surprised me most about the human footprint part 7 and 8 is the volume of natural resources required to create everyday things that we take for granted such as newspapers and cellphones…unbelievable.
Ways I can reduce my carbon emissions is being more energy efficient by buying energy efficient appliances, shutting off lights that aren’t being used, monitoring my thermostat at home, as well as driving less. I know I easily make better decisions with using my vehicle.
What surprised me the most was the ratio of the number of people in the U.S. versus the amount of resources that we use. The resources that we use for cell phones from Africa. It is something that never really crossed my mind. We are so very wasteful.
The ways that my family and I can reduce carbon emissions is to be more energy efficient. I drive more than 65 miles round trip to drop of kids, go to work, pick up kids, and go home everyday. That doesn't include all the additional stops that I will make to the grocery store, after school activities, and other errands that need to run. It will be something I consider the next time our family purchases a vehicle. I could be more aware of the energy we use in our home as well.
After watching the footprint 7 I did not know how much trees they use just to make newspapers. After I watch the footprint 8 I didn't realize that planes takeoff and land every second. One way to stop the carbon emission is to come up with new ways of making paper, and to stop cutting down trees.
Watching the human footprint 7 I realize that trees are very important to us and the use of them is not necessary that much, we are in a electronic based society now everything that goes on paper can be read via the internet, that's one way we can reduce emissions by saving the trees, also by finding ways to reduce the carbon monoxide from cars and especially from planes.
As Americans we use 43 tress per person, 5000 tress for our Sunday paper, 5054 papers in our lifetime "amazing" we buy 192 million cards on valentine Day! A single trip from Korea to Washington D.C puts 3.5 tons of carbon admission into the air, maybe we should go with a more efficient fuel to help with this problem.
What surprised me the most was the amount of paper that we go through in our lifetime. I knew trees were important I just did not know how much of it we actually used. I believe in order to reduce all of the carbon emissions that make up the newspaper we should try and go paperless. I know that I have been asked by my credit card company, etc if I would like to go paperless....i always say yes. We should all start with that because it'll help cut down the use of trees. We should also try the same with newspapers ...since that is what uses the most paper. Imagine the difference it'll make if we no longer used the same amount of paper for the newspapers and magazines...I'm sure our world would benefit from a move like that.
Wow that is crazy how many trees it takes just to supply newspaper. Think of how many people read the newspaper. Think about other paper, regular mail, magazines, paper towels, toilet paper, the list goes on and on! I think to reduce my carbon footprint I can waste less paper towels, I can switch to online bank statements (been meaning to do that forever anyway!), I can quit ordering the newspaper (let's just be honest, it's mostly depressing stuff I could go without knowing anyway).
These videos really is informational, because I did not know that 43 trees is used per person for the newspaper. I also did not know that 500,000 trees are used just to make the Sunday paper. Also did not know that we would need at least 4 planets if the whole world lived like we do in the U.S.
Thressa and Nicolette, it is crazy to think of the paper used just to make the newspaper. Going digital is definitely a way to reduce the waste created by newspaper production
I think that a lot of us recycle now will hopefully help our planet, but I wish everyone were required to recycle certain items instead of throwing them in the trash. Its hard to believe how much chemical and other metals we use in a life time. Everyone in the US could just play their part in helping our environment we would be better off today.
I was astonished by the amount of paper we each use, especially, since we can all admit to being wasteful with paper in our everyday lives. I was very concerned to see that we are using resources at a faster rate then the earth can resupply them. Since the United States appears to be the largest consumer of these precious resources, we should take the lead in developing a worldwide plan where replenishment is a requirement of usage. For example, a company would not be able to cut down trees without planting new ones or mine land without returning it to a usable state. If it is impossible to replenish a mined product, then the company should be required to conduct research to develop alternative products. It sounds like that is starting to happen, but it should be mandatory that each resource has some form of conservation strategy in place. It is scary to think that we are using our resources without consideration of replenishment or alternative supply sources and have no plans of what we will do when these resources are gone.
It is crazy to think about the amount of paper used, especially when you think of all the people who use an entire sheet of paper to jot down just a few things and then throw it away rather than re-use it. When you think about what it takes to make a single sheet of paper it is astonishing, but to think about how we use it so carelessly is even more.
Crystal your response made me think about how I used to try to recycle aluminum cans thinking I would be rich when I was younger. Only for my dreams to be crushed because of collecting 300 cans and receiving under $2 lol
After watching Human Footprints 7&8, I was surprised about the amounts of things we consume and use made me wonder the effect it has on the environment. It also made me think twice about trying to do things to recycle and cut back to better the environment. Ways to reduce carbon emissions could be recycling, using Greenhouses, using more electricity than gas
I could not believe the amount of carbon we emit each day. I also could not believe the amount of planes that go out of Atlanta everyday. My family recycles EVERYTHING!!! We get our newspaper online. We're trying to help with the carbon emission anyway we can.
Hey Sara, major cudos on the recycling! More of us need to jump on the recycling bandwagon. I for one will be calling my trash collector to order a new recy. bin today! I was deeply moved and I am also very concerned about what is going to happen to the generation after ours. At the rate that we are consuming resources and damaging the planet, the question begs to be asked, will our planet survive much longer at the rate we are abusing it?
There is a plane that leaves in Atlanta every 2 minutes! Wow! I have been to the Atlanta airport and it is definitely the most active airport in the US. It is crazy when you think about all the carbon monoxide that is released with one airplane ride. We as a society need to work on saving our planet... Just because the airplane ride is quicker doesn't mean it is the best way for our planet!
I was overwhelmed by the thought that Americans only make up 5% of the population but we create over 1/4 of the worlds waste. I was also appauled at the thought that if the rest of the world consumed at the same rate as we do, we would need 4 planets to survive! Wow. Americans consume faster and more than any other nation.
It was also interesting to learn that the Super Bowl is the #1 party event of the year for Americans and the amount of food we consume on that day!!! I think it said that the potato chips could go around the US border something like 10 times!!! Incredible. Marie Kent
I didn't know that we cut down 191 million trees every year just to make our Sunday papers. With cutting down that many trees, its got to be killing our environment. I never knew that we do so much harm to nature and the world. I know we did some because of pollution, but to that magnitude is ridiculous. I also didn't know we emitted so much carbon dioxide into the air. This is what I believe leads to the destruction of the ozone layer.
Mwatha, my thought exactly on the trees it takes for newspapers. Thank God for the internet right? To know that we have less than a hundred years of some of our most relied upon resources has to be disturbing. Why is no one talking about this on the evening news again?
I was blown away seeing how 43 trees per person is what it takes for each Sunday paper that we will read over our lifetime. I am sorry that people who work in the newspaper industry are losing their jobs due to online reading but this surely will help cut back on the amount of trees being cut down. I also did not realize that we were running so low on the amount of raw materials that we use daily. To learn that we only have 42 years worth of tin and 59 years worth of uranium left for our usage was truly amazing.
I never knew about the precious metals in cell phones, and why it was so important to recycle them. We do consume way to many resources on this earth without even thinking about. I never realized that within my life time many raw materials would be used up, people need to make more of an effort when it comes to recycling other wise our children and their children will really be in trouble.
I was amazed by the United States consumption of wasteful energy. The United States uses a quarter of the world energy. And the personal usage that each American use was far beyond my imagination, especially compared to people from other parts of the world. After reading this I realized that we can do our part by cutting back on electric usage, and other utilities like water, using furnace less, cut down on car emission by not driving so often, and most important recycling from items like paper, glass, plastic, wood, and everything that can be re-cycled. Thaddous McBurrows
Gregory Hawthore What surprised me the most was how much carbon emissions are created by gasoline in our vehicles. Over 360 tons of these emissions in our lifetime. Ways we can prevent carbon emissions is by car puling with other when going to school, work, sporting events, etc. Public transportation can also help for example taking buses, light rails, trains, and etc. Also properly recycling would be a way to help with carbon emissions Gregory Hawthorne
The amount of trees it takes to print the newspaper and magazines is astonishing! I would assume that this number is on the decline because of electronic reading, but the number is just crazy. My husband and I both work for the same employer but we don’t always drive to work together because of inconvenience (one of us would need to leave a little earlier and the other stay a little later). We could carpool more and adjust our schedules so that we could not only save money on gas but save carbon omissions by leaving one car at home. Jody Harrison
I coupon so newspapers on Sundays are a big deal for me. And I always buy more than one. I was surprised to find out that up to 500,000 trees are used each week to make the Sunday paper. We use a lot of paper though not just on Sundays. And that takes a lot of trees being cut down. I believe the easiest way to reduce carbon emissions would be to car pool. I mean really who wants to drive all day and everywhere? Not me.
I was amazed that it took 500,000 trees to make the Sunday newspaper. I am thankful for technology that reduces the need to cut so many trees thanks to emails. It was shocking to know that we (Americans) use more resources than any other country in the world. I hope we all work together to fix the problem before my grandchildren are grown ups. Toni Jones
I had no idea that part for cars came from so many different countries. I just thought that if the car was manufactured in a certain country that is just where the parts came from. As far as the newspapers taking so many trees, I wonder why they have not opened up the option to just purchase a digital copy. Most news is on the internet. I have not purchased a newspaper in a very long time due to this. Coupons can also be found online, which is a big reason most purchase Sunday papers. I also did not realize we were disrupting Africa over cell phones. I think cell phones are convenient, but I often wish they were not invented. My husband and two boys spend a lot of time with their noses in them. I would not be upset if America made a decision to stop making them. However, I know this will never happen. Erica Voigt
All these videos of human footprints keep giving use crazy numbers that becomes more and more unbelievable. The amount of carbon and all these things we basically throw to our planet are probably the worst thing we could do. And one of this day we're going to regret all this because our planet won't take it forever. After seeing these two videos I am not surprised there are so many more hurricanes nowadays than 50 years ago. We could reduce carbon emissions by reading the news and gossips online and online only. With our new digital society it is one of the best solution in order to stopp making newspaper and magazine. We could also use buses or bike for short distance ride. We could use one car for 4 person, for example if four people from the same job are using four cars to get to work it would be better if instead they use one car to get to work in order to reduce the amount of carbon emissions. I don't know what to do about planes emissions since planes are pretty much the only way we can travel the world as fast as we can.
Wow Im actually shocked. These two made a lot of sense to me especially being that I lived in a area where smog for cars was apart of the law. This really makes me want to invest in a bicycle or a motorcycle to prevent at least some of the carbon.
To see that we make up 5% of the world's population, yet we make 30% of the world's automobiles is amazing. I also couldn't believe that at any given moment, there are 1.2 billion cell phones in use. Considering that The Human Footprint was from 2009, I wonder how much that number has increased. I agree that we need to recycle cell phones along with lots and lots of other things we use. We ARE a very wasteful planet. I look forward to watching the next parts of the series, to see how much we waste as we get older. I think that it would be much lower than we do at a younger age.
It is just surprising how much we as Americans use our natural resources. To say that the United States comprises only 5% of the world's population, but we consume 30% of the world's energy is astounding. The video stated that Americans use 10,500,000 barrels of oil per day to power our automobiles. Not only are these numbers crazy, the amount of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide that are released into the atmosphere has to have some kind of effect on our planet. These excesses could be contributing to the greenhouse effect that is effecting our planet today. It is just baffling how we seem to use so many natural resources that only have a sustainable reserve for anywhere from 40 to 360 years and that is if we keep our current pace and no others countries increase their use of these materials. After watching these 2 video segments, I hope we can make some changes in our consumption of these raw materials in order to still provide for future generations.
It's amazing how many trees are wasted just for newspapers. I have several old cell phones that I can now recycle. I had no idea to do so. I also feel like I can certainly ride a bike or walk instead of driving my car. If more people did this they would benefit with a healthier lifestyle and also help our environment.
The amount of paper produced and trees destroyed is absurd!! With the availability of electronic resources, the need for that amount of paper just seems like a waste. We should be more mindful of our environment and reduce the amount of trees destroyed by subscribing to online newspapers, magazines, using e-cards, etc. to eliminate the need for that amount of destruction. As for the transportation aspect, that seems to be a losing battle. People need planes, trains, and automobiles in their daily lives, however, we should be mindful of unnecessary traveling, and try to do what we can to reduce our fossil fuel emissions.
what surprised me isthe amount of paper we use as a nation. the paper we use during holidays for cards and wrapping paper blew me away aswell. mainly was the newspaper usage of paper for jus sundays alone, 500,000 trees a week. then we use 191,000,000 tress alone a year for paper. to help with the carbon situation i think the best bet is to car pool
Week 5 - Human footprint Blog Post I was shocked to learn that Atlanta Airport is the busiest in the world, with 2,685 planes daily. I was also amazed at the amount of land cleared every minute, every day, two acres!! We become so use to the way of life we are accustomed to that we tend to live in a bubble without thinking of the bigger picture. It powerful to learn the impact we have on such a large scale. After hearing about our cell phones, I will make sure to recycle them. It seems like a simple way to help but according to the video it has drastic effects.
ReplyDeleteShannon, it is crazy to think about our carbon output just based on paper, imagine how that is multiplied when we look at textbooks. There is a big trend to start using e-books in higher education, which I think is a good idea and will help reduce our carbon footprint, but it is hard to get a lot of students to use them.
ReplyDeleteI knew that us americans used up more supplies then any other country.
ReplyDeleteI was very surprised to learn how much carbon emissions are created by gasoline in our vehicles-360 tons of these emissions in our lifetime! Some ways we can reduce these emissions are driving less often and/or carpooling. Since I have three small children, carpooling for my family is not very feasible. However, I can choose to limit my trips throughout the week. I also found it very interesting how many different places the parts of our vehicles come from!
ReplyDeleteI am amazed and appalled even more with every video I watch. I cannot beleive how much we waste in every aspects of our lives and I am so guilty. I don't even think about the consequences for my every day actions and I don't think that most people do. We would have to almost go back and live like cavemen to prevent the damage to the beautiful earth that our God created for us to live.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to learn about the carbon emissions from paper.
ReplyDeleteThe human footprint videos all amaze me anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe Human Footprint video was very enlightening.

ReplyDeleteThis is Catina Moore, I am always amazed of the numbers of all that we as an American consume on the on just the things we need.
ReplyDeleteThis is Melanie Croxall, I can't believe how much paper is used to make the sunday paper!! This is insane. We waste so much during the holidays and this is very unfortunate. I am also surprised by how much carbon dioxide is used and put in the air. No wonder we have global warning and all of this pollution.
ReplyDeleteThe paper surprised me the most.
ReplyDeleteI must say that with every video I am a little more suprised at what I see. It is amazing at the amount of materials we go through in our lifetime. If we can try and recycle, cut down on unecessary trips, and read the paper online, it will really make a difference. It is eye opening to know that Americans are making such an impact on the world.
ReplyDeleteI did not know that it requires 43 trees per person to make a newspaper that we are going to read in our lives.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed that it takes that many trees to make the sunday paper, especially because they are made once a week. Imagine how many trees are wasted in a year! Another thing that surprised me was the carbon emission from cars, trucks and machinery. I feel really guilty about the waste we have created.
ReplyDeleteWow we really need to consider riding a bike or car pooling if we work or go to long distance. I knew oil consupmtion was a issue but I never knew that it was a major issue.
ReplyDelete500,000 to make the sunday paper alone!!
ReplyDeleteAverage Americans carbon foot print is equal to 20 tons. We are consuming resounces faster than the Earth can replace them. If everyone else uses lead the way that we do then it would be gone in four years instead on the 42 year reserve. I think we really need to find a way to perserve these things. Americans uses way to many resources than other countries. Something need to be done.
ReplyDeleteDora Session
I did not know that Americans waste so many things. We have to cute down 191,000,000 million trees to make all the papers for one year, enough to cover the entire state of South Carlina. It is so much carbon dioxide is released into the air daily. We need to recycle as an entire country. If we don't get everyone on board with recycling we are going to use up all the resounces that we need to live and survive here on Earth.
ReplyDeleteIt surprised me that it takes up to 5oo,ooo trees to make our Sunday Newspaper each week. And that people will look at 5,054 Newspapers in a lifetime. We use a lot of paper and we are cutting down alot of trees.Driving less will help us with the carbon emisions.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked about how much paper we use and consume and we really waste alot during the holidays.
ReplyDeleteWhat surprised me most is where all of the materials come from to make an automobile. I had no idea that it took so much from so many different places to build a car. I was also surprised about the raw materials it takes to make a cell phone. I think if we use what we buy until we are forced to purchase new items, we could help lessen our carbon footprint.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised by the amount of paper that we use. We grow trees just to cut them down and use them just to make paper products. The easiest way to reduce carbon emissions is to car pool or use the city bus to get around. It is cheaper than paying $4.00 a gallon for gas.
ReplyDeleteThis video was very interesting to watch and realize how much trees is needed to make paper. We waste a lot of paper every day, we read the paper, magazines, etc…and when we finish reading we throw it in the trash.
DeleteI didn't know that a cell phone was so complexed to make. We use a lot of paper in the world which causes us to cut down a lot more trees. The best way to cut the cost of gas is to car poll to work. I would buy a bike if my job was close enough from my house as well.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised by the amout trees it takes to make news paper, magazines, books and anything that has to deal with cutting down trees.Use ebooks instead of paper books, watch the new on tv instead of buying a newspaper, ride the city bus line instead of driving, recycle cell phones instead of throwing them away.
ReplyDeleteYes, that is one good trend that is happening for nature. More people are using tablets and buying books and magazines online, which is helping to reduce the use of trees.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the two videos what surprised me the most was how all different car parts come from all over the world and how much trees it take to make newspapers. What we can do to reduce carbon emmisions is drive less and get news facts from the news instead of buying newspapers.
ReplyDeleteI think what surprised me the most is the amount of trees we cut down for our newspaper and magazines. Also the footprint we leave behind. The only way of stopping this is by reading more in the internet and printing less. What also surprised me was the cellphone use of natural resources.
ReplyDeleteI have found all the Human Footprint videos so far, very interesting and informative.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised most by the amount of trees that are used for newspaper, magazines, books, cards and etc. I know newspapers are printed daily and paper is used daily but when you put a number figure on it and actually think about the amount that's used its surprising. In order to reduce carbon emissions we could use paperless methods to receive our news and also reduce the amount of driving we do.
ReplyDeleteAt first when I heard it took 43 trees to make up for all the paper we will read in a lifetime, I didn't think nothing of it. When I found how many trees were used to make our Sunday paper each week I got a little worried. The 191,000,000 trees used a year got me upset because they know the trees are our life support and for them to cut so many down with ease seems cruel and unusual. These people are destroying us. This to me is pure ignorance.
ReplyDeleteWhat suprised me the most is how much trees we used for paper.
ReplyDeletewhat surprised me most about this human footprint is that our nation only makes up 5% of the world population yet we use so many resources. I like how they used the example about the tree's that was also very interesting to know that we use so much paper. But the part about the car wasn't a real surprise to me because we all commute at one time or another.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't aware of the many trees that are destroyed just to make news paper. By eliminating the trees causes the oxygen level to drop and replacing it with carbon dioxide. To help with this problem, I can start off by buying artifiical Christmas trees and recycling them when old and worn. And planting live trees and plants often a yaer to help bring live to this situation.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed at how much trees it takes to make paper, 500,000 to be exact.
ReplyDeleteI was shock about the amount of trees we cut just to make newspapers. One week worth of newspapers means 500,000 trees gone. But in a year it is over one million trees cut.The main thing I was shocked about was the superbowl was the most celebrated event food wise.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised when i realized how much it takes to make paper. Not only that but the amount of carbon that is released. I think a way that we can reduce carbon emissions is by recycling.
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised when i found out that the super bowl is the most food celebrated event.

ReplyDeleteI understood that as we are polluting the earth with our vehicles and what not it is causing the earths atmosphere to become thinner and thinner, creating global warming.
-Cassie Truett
I beleive that we can reduce the carbon emission. Thing like people have mentioned before the x mas paper, boxer the gifts come in, drywall tear down, all cardboad and platics use for shipping and manufacturing produce and goods we the consumer buy. All of this go straight to the trash site to be burn and yet we use so mush of it. They also say that global warming is in the air and mist and also a journey towards upcoming events. A lot of people fail to recycle because they think oh its just one box. one jug, but it eveyone thinks like that then we in fact have a problem. a problem that can be fixed.
ReplyDeleteI never realize how much food we intake doing the Holiday days, especially the turkey, alone with all the other sides that goes with the dinner. One would think Thanksgiving is a day that we would intake the most foods; however after looking at the Human Footprint, the NFL Super Bowl is the time we consume the most foods.
ReplyDeleteAirplanes fly high, and they burn fuel in large quantities. They have direct access to the atmosphere above and the emissions caused are left as residuals in the atmosphere at higher altitudes. When an airplane flies, it pumps carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and also organic compounds into the atmosphere. These chemicals are volatile in nature.
What surprised me the most about clips 7&8
ReplyDeleteLiving is not simple.

ReplyDeleteI knew trees were used to make newspaper, but didn't realize that it took that many trees to get it publish and print.
ReplyDeleteWhat surprised me the most as well as and learning experience is that we release 1000 tons of carbon dioxide per day just to the paper. Working in and hospital l I make a lot of copies of patients information daily. I would’ve never in a million years thought about how much carbon dioxide is being used. Even when it comes down to reading a newspaper.
ReplyDeleteHuman Footprint 7 & 8....I was surprised about how many trees are used in a week to furnish newspaper and magazines, i dont feel as though that is a necessity and should be cut back by utilizing online or cutting back to every other day.
ReplyDeleteIn the Human footprint every time it never seems to amaze me. I was surprised about all the paper used. I feel as if we should cut down on the waste even more! I just feel as if we don't notice all the waste we have in the world. I enjoy watching these videos to learn more about the world.
ReplyDeleteI was most surprised by how many trees are used for newspapers and also how much more Americans use resources verses other countries around the world. We can reduce our carbon emissions by using electric vehicles or perhaps carpooling or riding a bike.

ReplyDeleteWeek 5 Human Foot Print,
All I could say is wow.
ReplyDeleteI was amazed at the amount of trees used in the production of newspapers.
ReplyDeleteI was completely shocked about how many trees that are used to make newspapers and magazines.

ReplyDeleteHuman Footprint 7 & 8
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that 191 million trees are used for making all the papers for one year.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised 191, 000, 000 trees are used just for making papers every year.
ReplyDeleteHuman Footprint 7 gave me quite some amount of surprizes, with the amount of turkeys we eat at Thanksgiving, the amount f trees we cut down to make newspaper and the amount of carbondioide that is released when the trees are cut down. Then we got to cars and their make up, just where the parts of the cars are made; so you car actually comes from across the world.
ReplyDeleteIn Human footprint 8 2685 planes take of daily from Atlanta airport, now that amazing.
ReplyDeleteWhat shocked me was it takes 500,000 trees just to make the Sunday paper each week. That's a lot of trees. I think we all can cut back by reading the paper online instead of buying the paper daily.
ReplyDeleteI am astounded by the amount of materials they humans have been using throughout our time on Earth. I was surprised to learn that many common resources may be gone for good within my lifetime and I wonder what we will use when we run out of them, for instance lead.
ReplyDeleteI can reduce my carbon footprint by not using as many resources; i.e., walk or ride a bike instead of driving, downsize to cheaper forms of transportation, and reduce the amount of items I use that requires packaging
Edris Logan-Briscoe
ReplyDeleteAfter viewing parts 7 and 8, I was mostly surprised about all the natural components, materials, and minerals we use to produce a car, newspaper, cell phone etc.

ReplyDeleteI tend to get Sunday's paper just for the weekly ads and coupons, and sometimes i even get two.
ReplyDeleteI've often looked at our skyscrapers and infrastructure and wondered how would it be before we ran out of material to make concrete; or the rate at which we use fossil fuels and how much long we have before that well runs dry. But the thing that really got my attention was the fact that we may very well run out of oxygen at the rate we are killing trees. I, for one, plan to use as little paper as I can, while instilling this awareness in the minds of my family and friends.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching videos 7 and 8 I was amazed at the amount of carbon dioxide that we use compared to other countries.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching Human foot print 7 and 8 I was surprise to learn that it takes 500,000 tress to make our Sunday paper that why its so important for us to recycle.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the videos 7 and 8 I was amazed on several different things.First of all I never stop to think about the tons of carbon dioxide we use.
ReplyDeleteRandy Daniels
ReplyDeleteViewing video 7 and 8 it bring more attention to paper and the many different uses we have for it.
ReplyDeleteI can not believe that we cut down nearly 191,000,000 a year just for newspapers, enough to cover the entire state of South Carolina. Releasing 365,500 tons of carbon dioxide will be unabsorbed each year because these trees are not there to absorb them. 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide released a day just to read the newspaper that I do not read! We need to quickly move our country more into the digital age as soon as possible!
ReplyDeleteI would say the main thing that shocked me in watching videos 7 & 8 was the number of trees it took just for us to read the news paper on sundays as well as the number of trees that were cut down in order for the state of south carolina to have news papers.
ReplyDeleteOuida Ricketts
ReplyDeleteI was shocked after watching, as I did not realize the amount of things that goes into making a car, cell phone and all the other stuff.
ReplyDeleteCan you see now why more paper and magazine companies are going digital?
ReplyDeleteAfter Viewing parts 7 & 8 of the human footprint, what surprised you the most? Can you think of ways you can reduce your carbon emissions?
ReplyDeleteOne way to reduce carbon emission would be when flying take a direct flight instead of hopping from plane to plane.
ReplyDeleteJonathan Harnage
ReplyDeleteMichael farrell
ReplyDeletei find it interesting that only since gas prices have gone up, have people started to become concerned with the amount of fuel there vehicle uses. but fuel use and carbon emission go hand in hand.

ReplyDeleteThe thing that surprised me the most was that our cellphones require colten and the destruction it causes in the country it is mined in. I have personally refused to by gems mined through conflict but I never knew that cellphones caused the same problem. I think I will have to upgrade less often and I will always recycle them now...I feel bad that I was ignorant to this until now. :(
We could lower our carbon emissions by driving less.
ReplyDeleteAfter viewing both parts 7 & 8 what surprised me the most was the fact of how many different countries provide materials to build one automobile. If we could manufacture the parts needed for the assembly of an automobile, we could help to stimulate the country's economy by creating several jobs for this process alone.
DeleteAnother startling fact was the number of trees destroyed to print the Sunday's newspaper-500,000 trees.
ReplyDeleteLoretta Edwards
It was surprising to me too the amount of trees used for Christmas, it made me go out and get an artificial one.
DeleteIt scares me to think that everything we do impacts the earth. Simple things like using our cell phones can be dangerous to the atmosphere. What surprised me most about the human footprint part 7 and 8 is the volume of natural resources required to create everyday things that we take for granted such as newspapers and cellphones…unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteWays I can reduce my carbon emissions is being more energy efficient by buying energy efficient appliances, shutting off lights that aren’t being used, monitoring my thermostat at home, as well as driving less. I know I easily make better decisions with using my vehicle.
Lester, it is tough to realize the amount of resources that do go into a cell phone and then realize how often we replace them.
DeleteWhat surprised me the most was the ratio of the number of people in the U.S. versus the amount of resources that we use. The resources that we use for cell phones from Africa. It is something that never really crossed my mind. We are so very wasteful.
ReplyDeleteThe ways that my family and I can reduce carbon emissions is to be more energy efficient.
Samantha, that is great that you will consider a more fuel efficient car for your next purchase.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the footprint 7 I did not know how much trees they use just to make newspapers. After I watch the footprint 8 I didn't realize that planes takeoff and land every second. One way to stop the carbon emission is to come up with new ways of making paper, and to stop cutting down trees.
ReplyDeleteAntonio, the best replacement for trees, when it comes to papers and magazines is to subscribe to the digital format.
DeleteWatching the human footprint 7 I realize that trees are very important to us and the use of them is not necessary that much, we are in a electronic based society now everything that goes on paper can be read via the internet, that's one way we can reduce emissions by saving the trees, also by finding ways to reduce the carbon monoxide from cars and especially from planes.
ReplyDeleteAs Americans we use 43 tress per person, 5000 tress for our Sunday paper, 5054 papers in our lifetime "amazing" we buy 192 million cards on valentine Day! A single trip from Korea to Washington D.C puts 3.5 tons of carbon admission into the air, maybe we should go with a more efficient fuel to help with this problem.
ReplyDeleteWhat surprised me the most was the amount of paper that we go through in our lifetime.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is surprising how much paper we use. Hopefully with the popularity of tablets, people will start going to digital news and save some trees.
ReplyDeleteWow that is crazy how many trees it takes just to supply newspaper.
ReplyDeleteThese videos really is informational, because I did not know that 43 trees is used per person for the newspaper. I also did not know that 500,000 trees are used just to make the Sunday paper. Also did not know that we would need at least 4 planets if the whole world lived like we do in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteTo reduce carbon emission I would start reading the newspaper on the computer or my Ipad.
ReplyDeleteThressa and Nicolette, it is crazy to think of the paper used just to make the newspaper. Going digital is definitely a way to reduce the waste created by newspaper production
ReplyDeleteI think that a lot of us recycle now will hopefully help our planet, but I wish everyone were required to recycle certain items instead of throwing them in the trash. Its hard to believe how much chemical and other metals we use in a life time. Everyone in the US could just play their part in helping our environment we would be better off today.
ReplyDeleteI was astonished by the amount of paper we each use, especially, since we can all admit to being wasteful with paper in our everyday lives.
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy to think about the amount of paper used, especially when you think of all the people who use an entire sheet of paper to jot down just a few things and then throw it away rather than re-use it. When you think about what it takes to make a single sheet of paper it is astonishing, but to think about how we use it so carelessly is even more.
ReplyDeleteCrystal your response made me think about how I used to try to recycle aluminum cans thinking I would be rich when I was younger. Only for my dreams to be crushed because of collecting 300 cans and receiving under $2 lol
ReplyDeleteAfter watching Human Footprints 7&8, I was surprised about the amounts of things we consume and use made me wonder the effect it has on the environment. It also made me think twice about trying to do things to recycle and cut back to better the environment. Ways to reduce carbon emissions could be recycling, using Greenhouses, using more electricity than gas
ReplyDeleteI could not believe the amount of carbon we emit each day. I also could not believe the amount of planes that go out of Atlanta everyday. My family recycles EVERYTHING!!! We get our newspaper online. We're trying to help with the carbon emission anyway we can.
ReplyDeleteHey Sara, major cudos on the recycling!
DeleteThere is a plane that leaves in Atlanta every 2 minutes! Wow! I have been to the Atlanta airport and it is definitely the most active airport in the US. It is crazy when you think about all the carbon monoxide that is released with one airplane ride. We as a society need to work on saving our planet... Just because the airplane ride is quicker doesn't mean it is the best way for our planet!
ReplyDeleteI was overwhelmed by the thought that Americans only make up 5% of the population but we create over 1/4 of the worlds waste. I was also appauled at the thought that if the rest of the world consumed at the same rate as we do, we would need 4 planets to survive! Wow. Americans consume faster and more than any other nation.
ReplyDeleteIt was also interesting to learn that the Super Bowl is the #1 party event of the year for Americans and the amount of food we consume on that day!!!
ReplyDeleteMwatha Grant
Mwatha, my thought exactly on the trees it takes for newspapers. Thank God for the internet right? To know that we have less than a hundred years of some of our most relied upon resources has to be disturbing. Why is no one talking about this on the evening news again?
DeleteI was blown away seeing how 43 trees per person is what it takes for each Sunday paper that we will read over our lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI never knew about the precious metals in cell phones, and why it was so important to recycle them. We do consume way to many resources on this earth without even thinking about. I never realized that within my life time many raw materials would be used up, people need to make more of an effort when it comes to recycling other wise our children and their children will really be in trouble.
ReplyDeleteI was amazed by the United States consumption of wasteful energy. ReplyDeleteWhat surprised me the most was how much carbon emissions are created by gasoline in our vehicles. Over 360 tons of these emissions in our lifetime. Ways we can prevent carbon emissions is by car puling with other when going to school, work, sporting events, etc. Public transportation can also help for example taking buses, light rails, trains, and etc. Also properly recycling would be a way to help with carbon emissions

ReplyDeleteThe amount of trees it takes to print the newspaper and magazines is astonishing!
ReplyDeleteJody Harrison
I coupon so newspapers on Sundays are a big deal for me. And I always buy more than one. I was surprised to find out that up to 500,000 trees are used each week to make the Sunday paper. We use a lot of paper though not just on Sundays. And that takes a lot of trees being cut down. I believe the easiest way to reduce carbon emissions would be to car pool. I mean really who wants to drive all day and everywhere? Not me.
ReplyDeleteI agree Jody I think the new digital media is helping reduce the waste caused by traditional papers.
ReplyDeleteKiersten, car pooling is a great idea, but many people, especially in rural areas, like in Lake Wales, just do not have that opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI was amazed that it took 500,000 trees to make the Sunday newspaper. I am thankful for technology that reduces the need to cut so many trees thanks to emails. It was shocking to know that we (Americans) use more resources than any other country in the world. I hope we all work together to fix the problem before my grandchildren are grown ups.
ReplyDeleteToni Jones

ReplyDeleteWe could reduce carbon emissions by reading the news and gossips online and online only.
ReplyDeleteTo see that we make up 5% of the world's population, yet we make 30% of the world's automobiles is amazing.
ReplyDeleteIt is just surprising how much we as Americans use our natural resources.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how many trees are wasted just for newspapers. I have several old cell phones that I can now recycle. I had no idea to do so. I also feel like I can certainly ride a bike or walk instead of driving my car. If more people did this they would benefit with a healthier lifestyle and also help our environment.
ReplyDeleteThe amount of paper produced and trees destroyed is absurd!! With the availability of electronic resources, the need for that amount of paper just seems like a waste. We should be more mindful of our environment and reduce the amount of trees destroyed by subscribing to online newspapers, magazines, using e-cards, etc. to eliminate the need for that amount of destruction.
ReplyDeleteAs for the transportation aspect, that seems to be a losing battle.
ReplyDeleteWeek 5 - Human footprint Blog Post
ReplyDeleteI was shocked to learn that Atlanta Airport is the busiest in the world, with 2,685 planes daily.
